Health projects in Cooperatives
Hoja Blanca and Agua Dulce
(see the monthly reports and photos)
According to its philosophy, the UGK Foundation supports, on the one hand, technical projects that strengthen coffee production, and on the other hand, social projects that improve the often precarious living conditions of the members of the cooperatives, as well as the families in the communities where they live.
In the year 2022, Fedecocagua's clients PALS in Norway and Blasercafé in Switzerland have been sponsoring through the UGK Foundation two health projects in the municipality of Cuilco (Huehuetenango). The Hoja Blanca and Agua Dulce Cooperatives, like many other organizations affiliated to Fedecocagua, support social projects in their communities. With the two projects of the UGK Foundation, the Cooperative Agua Dulce helps facilitate the construction of a new health center in a safer place after the previous one was destroyed by a hurricane in 2020. The Cooperativa Hoja Blanca, which has run a health center for 35 years, thanks to our support can offer more services to the people of the community.
Our monthly reports allow us to understand what conditions the beneficiaries of the projects live in, what efforts they themselves make to improve them, what results are achieved, sometimes also what problems may arise that were not foreseen: we can always learn something!
What is certain is that the beneficiaries of our projects are always very grateful.
The importance of prenatal care
for the health of mother and child
The donations made by the UGK Foundation to the Nueva Esperanza Health Center in the village of Hoja Blanca, Cuilco, Huehuetenango, allow us to continue offering health services to the population of our municipality, in terms of prenatal care, childbirth and other consultations of all kinds. A nurse ensures that low-income families receive quality treatment.
In the picture we can see Doña E., who is becoming a mother for the first time. She trusts the local health center and in this way avoids going to one of the clinics, most of which are located in the main city of the department. Since communities like Hoja Blanca are far from there, access to them is difficult and expensive.
